Pay in AED or local currency? The DCC decision

A terminal abroad may offer to show the charge in dirhams. That feels familiar, but it changes who performs the conversion. Here is the practical way to decide.

The short answer

When a foreign merchant or ATM offers a choice between AED and the local currency, choose the local currency in most cases. The AED choice is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): the merchant, acquirer or ATM provider converts the transaction and displays its rate and markup. Choosing the local currency lets your card's normal network and issuer conversion process handle the foreign amount.

DCC is not the same as your card's foreign transaction fee, and it is not automatically cheaper because the screen shows AED. Check the currency, exchange rate, markup and final amount before confirming; if the choice is unclear, cancel and ask the merchant to process the transaction in the local currency.

How to spot DCC

  • The terminal asks “AED or local currency?” or names “home currency” or “guaranteed rate”.
  • The screen shows your UAE dirham amount before the payment is authorised.
  • The ATM offers to “convert”, “lock in” or “guarantee” the exchange rate.
  • The receipt shows AED even though the purchase was made in EUR, GBP, USD, THB, JPY or another local currency.

DCC at a shop, hotel or restaurant

  • Select the destination currency, such as EUR in France or JPY in Japan.
  • If the cashier selected AED without asking, request cancellation and re-run the payment in the local currency.
  • Keep the receipt. It should show the local amount and identify any conversion choice or fee.

DCC at an ATM

An ATM can offer DCC after you enter the amount. Decline the conversion and continue with the withdrawal in the local currency. You may still see a separate ATM operator fee; that is different from DCC and should be displayed before confirmation.

Use a bank-branded or reputable ATM where possible, withdraw only what you need, and check your card's own cash-withdrawal fee before travelling.

Frequently asked questions

Is DCC always a scam?

DCC is a disclosed conversion service, but disclosure does not mean the rate is the best available. Compare the displayed rate and amount, and choose the local currency if you want your card's usual conversion path.

Does choosing local currency guarantee a specific exchange rate?

No. The card network rate can vary with processing and settlement timing and may differ from an interbank or public rate. Choosing local currency avoids accepting the merchant's DCC conversion; it does not promise a particular rate.

Does Sinder charge DCC?

DCC is selected by the merchant or ATM provider, not created by Sinder. Sinder's published rule applies when the foreign transaction is processed through the card network; choose the local currency to avoid accepting a third-party conversion.

What should I select in Thailand or Japan?

Select THB in Thailand and JPY in Japan. The same principle applies in every destination: use the currency of the purchase rather than AED at the terminal.
