Foreign transaction fees in the UAE what to check before you travel
A foreign purchase can involve more than one exchange-rate and fee decision. Use this checklist to understand the rate, issuer markup, ATM costs and merchant conversion before you leave the UAE.
The short answer
Written by Sinder Editorial · Reviewed by Sinder Product & Compliance · Last updated 2 September 2026
Start with the card's foreign-currency transaction fee and the rate it applies to. A card may use a card-network rate and add an issuer markup, or use a wallet balance that is converted under a different rule. Then check ATM fees, weekend or allowance rules, cash-advance treatment, and whether a merchant or ATM can apply Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC).
Sinder uses the Mastercard Exchange Rate and adds 0% Sinder FX markup within the AED 40,000 / month worldwide allowance. Above the allowance, the excess carries +0.5% on weekdays or +1.5% on weekends. Merchant, ATM and other third-party charges can still apply, so the card price is not the same thing as the total cost of every transaction.
The fee checklist
- Rate source: identify whether the card uses a card-network rate, a provider rate or a pre-loaded wallet rate.
- Issuer markup: find the percentage, allowance, currency exclusions and whether the charge applies to the whole transaction or only an excess.
- Timing: check when the rate is set and whether weekends or settlement timing change the result.
- Cash: check the foreign ATM fee, local operator fee, withdrawal limits and whether credit-card cash advances carry interest.
- Merchant choice: decline DCC when the terminal or ATM offers to convert the transaction into AED.
A simple way to compare cards
Write down the amount you expect to spend by card, the currencies you will use and whether you need cash. Compare the issuer's published FX rule for that scenario, not only a headline such as “0%”. A 0% issuer markup can still sit alongside the network's own rate and a third-party ATM charge.
For a Sinder cardholder, the relevant question is whether the transaction is within the AED 40,000 monthly worldwide allowance and whether it is card spending or cash withdrawal. The allowance covers the Sinder FX markup rule; it does not remove merchant or ATM fees.
Before you travel
- Save the issuer's fee disclosure and check the last-updated date.
- Carry a backup payment method and keep enough balance for a temporary hotel or car-rental authorisation hold.
- Choose the local currency at terminals and ATMs, and review the final settled amount rather than relying only on a pending estimate.
Frequently asked questions
What is a foreign transaction fee?
It is a fee or markup a card provider may apply when a transaction is made in a foreign currency. The network exchange rate, issuer markup and third-party charges are separate things to check.
Does 0% FX mean the transaction is free?
Not necessarily. Confirm the exact rate, allowance and exclusions, and remember that a merchant, ATM operator or other third party may add a charge. Sinder's 0% Sinder markup applies within its published AED 40,000 / month worldwide allowance.
Are foreign ATM withdrawals covered by an FX allowance?
Do not assume so. Check the card's separate cash-withdrawal fee, the ATM operator fee and the allowance wording. Sinder publishes a 1% ATM fee capped at AED 25, plus any local operator fee.
Should I pay in AED or the local currency?
Choose the local currency when given the choice. An AED option is usually DCC, where the merchant or ATM provider sets the conversion instead of your card's normal conversion path.
